Description: Antique 1787-1789 4-volume set of books " Historical and Chronological Deduction of the Origin of Commerce from the Earliest Accounts containing an History of the great commercial interests of the British Empire. To which is prefixed an Introduction exhibiting a view of the ancient and modern state of Europe; of the importance of our Colonies; and of the Commerce, Shipping, Manufactures, Fisheries &c. of Great-Britain and Ireland ; and Their Influence on the Landed Interest. With an Appendix Containing the Modern Politico-Commercial Geography of the Several Countries of Europe. Carefully Revised, Corrected, and Continued to the Present Time. In Four Volumes." by Adam Andreson. First 4to Edition (2nd overall after the 2-volume folio edition of 1764). Volumes 1 to 3 are published in 1787, the 4th volume in 1789 - the best edition of an important history of commerce. "Coming down from earliest times to the year 1762, Anderson's work is a monument of stupendous industry. Composed in the form of annals, it is not merely a record of commercial progress and colonial enterprise, but a history of the political, industrial, and social development of all civilised countries, and especially of Great Britain and Ireland" (Dictionary of National Biography). Four 4to volumes 11.5" tall, 9" wide. Volume 1 rebound in early 20 century library boards, volumes retained original calf boards but were respined with brown cloth, volume 2 not repaired but the binding in poor condition with both front and back covers detached and spine chipped off. Old library bookplates on endpapers inside, inventory numbers on spines. The contents are overall good and mostly clean with some occasional foxing and age-browning (unobtrusive) rather normal for the age. The textblocks are reasonably tight and complete - a very good candidate for rebinding. The pagination is: [2], (v)-lxxxviii, 556; [2], 647, [1]; [2 ], 508, [59], [1], [11)], [1]; [2], iv, [4], 718, [43], [1]pp. 2 spectacular folding World maps in volume 1 plus and engraved Frontispiece and one folding table in volume 4. A complete and well worth restoring (or just keeping as is) 234 years old historically important work. At this time only 2 other copies of this set are available elsewhere online - with the cheapest copy in cmparable condition priced at $750 plus shipping, and the other copy in better condition priced at $4,537.
