Description: CABOCHON 'PURPLE RAIN'GQ from CALIFORNIA Welcome to the Gold of Eldorado! The parent rock which yielded this stone originated in California's Mother Lode. Judging from the nice veins of high-purity gold, it was very rich ore. A handsome GQ gem set inside anything made of karat gold adds considerable value. The purple-hued matrix here, seen close up, shows a fine spiderweb network of fine, pink-to-purple capillaries. If you're drawn to exotic GQ from the western U.S. goldfields, maybe you're feeling the pull. The top, show face is flat-lapped. The flip side is also flat. If you don't know much about gold, gold ores/gold quartz, lapidary, gemology, mineralogy, geology, or mining for gold; if you don't care for jewelry at all, just buy and cache this beautiful gem. GQ or 'gold quartz' is, basically, gold ore. When ore is rich and aesthetic enough, it becomes desirable as jewelry-grade gemstone. For hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, jewelers have been incorporating it into spectacular, karat-gold, works of art. Almost any kind of rock can be cut and made into cabs, but GQ is a different 'animal' altogether because it carries the precious cargo, gold. You would not wish to destroy this kind of stone just to extract the gold. That would be like crushing a high-quality diamond to use as an abrasive. In spite of the massive difference in value between GQ (in this instance, $30/ct) and high-caliber diamond ($1000s/ct), gem-grade gold quartz is as rare, precious, and beautiful a mineral complex as you will find on the planet. Weight: 18.4 Grains (Troy) - 5.93 Carats Dimensions: 12.8 mm (long) X 10.7 mm (wide) X 3 mm (thick) When conditions are just right, super-heated aqueous solutions, rich in silica and assorted minerals, cool. Injected into the fissures, cracks, faults, and vugs of standing country rock, metals like gold, along with silicon dioxide, precipitate and harden. This is part of a process known as metallogenesis. Natural weathering from richer portions of these gold veins ultimately produce broken-off bits and pieces of gold quartz. As this now displaced alluvial material moves downward, either rapidly or slowly, the gold separates from it’s host rock. Nuggets, flakes, flour gold, and colloidial gold are the result. Vein filling which retains both gold and it’s host rock (that is, quartz), if dense and rich enough, can be converted into a highly-prized gemstone. Then, just to liven things up, the mineral characteristics of this true goldstone differs from vein to vein causing variations in residual color patterns, ore density, composition, and gold karatage. The purplish, earth-tone colors and excellent karatage of gold found in this stone may dissolve every notion you ever had of what gold ores were supposed to look like. NATIVE MINERALS Check any and all Gold of Eldorado feedback for disputes arising from non-authenticity of the specimens I sell. You won't find any. I deal in native minerals with visible gold, not replicas, not 'paint-ons'. I don't peddle 'simulated' specimens made with minute amounts of gold or no real gold at all. No fake nuggets here, folks. I was a professional placer miner myself and personally have bought stuff with gold painted on it. Some so-called 'natural gold quartz' specimens acquired had tiny chunks of placer gold glued into the vugs of barren rock. If folks want to fake their specimens, then it should be mandatory they advertise their products as simulations or replications. All of my advertised specimens, slabs, cabochons, gold ores et al are authentic and contain naturally-occurring, native gold and/or are composed almost entirely of naturally-occurring gold (i.e. gold nuggets, gold flakes, wire gold specimens). The purity of this gold will vary, but if it's from California, you can count on it being fairly high, from 70% to 90% pure on average. For comparision, a 14K gold wedding band is 58% pure gold. The origin of this gemstone is a vein system somewhere in the Sierra Nevada Mtns. of California. Thanks for checking out our digs. I hope you find rich ground ahead. Gold of Eldorado 1-7-17
