Description: This 1951 German import mono album from Electrola (relabeled as Odeon on the disc itself) (E 90 031) features a performance of Dido und Aeneas by Henry Purcell. Featured performers include Anna Pollak (soprano), Arda Mandikian (soprano), Davis Lloyd (tenor), Eilidh McNab (soprano), Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (soprano), Kirsten Flagstad (soprano), Sheila Rex (soprano) and Thomas Hemsley (tenor). Accompaniment is by The Mermaid Singers & Orchestra, conducted by Geraint Jones. Album notes are in German, but lyrics are in English. Also included is a photocopied review of the album from the January, 1953 issue of The Gramophone. Although the album is branded as Electrola, the record itself shows a very precisely-placed, semi-circular second label overlaying the original logo on both sides, showing the Odeon name. The record is in Excellent condition overall, but does show one (somewhat U-shaped) scratch on Side 1. Due to this, we have played both sides through their entirety on a Thorens TD-126 Mk III turntable, and heard no major issues. The scratch itself is not obtrusive in playback, but is obvious if you're listening for it, so we will grade this as VG+. The outer sleeve is in only Fair condition, showing a number of creases, scrub marks and tape repairs, but has served to protect the record very well over the decades.
