Description: This is a Prussian infantry officers’ helmet, known as a pickelhaube. The helmet is complete with canvas cover and fitted carrying case. The pickelhaube was in use until mid-WW I when it was replaced by a steel helmet in 1916. Rather than having two helmets, one for show and one for combat, the canvas cover was placed over the helmet for combat or field operations. This helmet is in “as found” condition when it was acquired in 2002. No attempt has been made to refinish, touch up, clean, or polish the helmet. The black lacquered helmet body with gilded trim is in excellent condition except for some scuff marks that can be seen in the accompanying photos. The front plate is the Prussian line regiment eagle. A banner reads: Mit Gott Fur Koenig Und Vaterland (translated “With God for King and Fatherland”) It has the officer spike top with gilt star retainers. Interior has sweat band of leather and a silk headliner in remarkably good condition. Size is marked as 55 ½ (US size 7). The helmet top plate is secured by four brass nuts. It appears from the photo of inside of helmet that the spike might be removed by unscrewing it, but no attempt was made to remove it. Inside of visors are red in front and blue in back. Canvas cover has initials D.R.P. on inside front. Carrying case shows the expected wear and age, and the interior is in excellent condition. Overall a very attractive display piece, and rare in that it is complete with canvas field/battle cover and carrying case.
