Description: An interesting and unusual early set of the first Phoenix Library editions of Marcel Proust's mesmerizing masterpiece Remembrance of Things Past, translated by Scott Moncrieff and published by Chatto & Windus between 1929 and 1936: 8 volumes, being Swann's Way I & II, Within A Budding Grove, I & II, The Guermantes Way I & II, and Cities of the Plain I & II. [The remaining parts, The Captive I &II, The Sweet Cheat Gone and Time Regained, never appeared in Phoenix editions - instead Chatto opted to republish the entire work in a new Uniform Edition, first published in 1941.] Neat little pocket-sized versions, 7 inches x 4 1/2 inches. Swann's Way I & II: first Phoenix editions, 1929 [ Chatto brought out the first English editions in 1922, going through 5 impressions before the 1929 Phoenix Library edition]Budding Grove I & II: first Phoenix editions 1929 [ Chatto's first English editions are from 1924, 2 impressions, followed by the 1929 Phoenix Library edition]Guermantes I & II: first Phoenix editions 1930 [Chatto's first English editions are from 1925, no further impressions until the 1930 Phoenix Library edition]Cities of the Plain I & II: first Phoenix editions 1936 [ First English edition is from 1930, in fact by Knopf, London, replacing Chatto] All 8 volumes here are in the original publisher's dark-blue boards, gilt titling and decoration to spines and blind-stamped phoenix emblem to front board. Some wear throughout; some boards more scuffed and worn than others; contents complete, with each volume also containing between 7 and 16 pages of publisher's adverts to the rear; a few volumes have early bookseller labels to paste-downs, one with an early owner inscription. The Swann's Way Volume I is missing most of its ffep, seemingly excised to remove an owner inscription; on the other hand, that volume (alone) retains its rare original red and cream Phoenix Library dust-wrapper which has some grubbiness, minor losses, creases and tears, now housed in fully removable protective sleeve. Internally, page-blocks similarly display different amounts of wear with some isolated early staining, not affecting text. Overall, an interesting, unusual and attractive set of early Proust editions in English. Please view photographs which seek to provide fuller clarity as to condition.
