It became one of America’s most influential media companies—a sensational “pulp empire” of muscles and magazines, known for its interactive content, broad reach, and massive circulations. Owned by Bernarr Macfadden, he was able to transform a pulp empire into a mass media company. In 1899, Macfadden founded Physical Culture, an American magazine on bodybuilding, health, and fitness, and which told their readers personal stories that were submitted. In May 1919, readers’ letters to Physical Culture magazine resulted in a new magazine, True Story, later, True Detective, and True Romances. Macfadden eventually grew a publishing empire, including Liberty, Dream World, Ghost Stories, the once-familiar movie magazine Photoplay, and the tabloid newspaper, The New York Evening Graphic. Macfadden's magazines also included SPORT, a preeminent sports magazine prior to Time Inc.'s Sports Illustrated.
