He took office determined to "complete and perfect the machinery" of Roosevelt's reforms, but the natural storm which greeted his administration was soon followed by a number of political squalls which quickly undermined him. The second and concluding volume of Henry F. Pringle's sparkling biography of the only man ever to be both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is equally as compelling and fascinating as the initial volume. It rejoins Taft as he is poised to run for re-election. A rigid sense of personal integrity, and a lack of the true politician's sleight of hand skills, resulted in Taft's losing the support of liberal Republicans. This important group turned again to Roosevelt for leadership. With Teddy Roosevelt back in the fray as the candidate of the short-lived "Bull Moose" Party, the Republican vote was split. Taft was resoundingly defeated. But only for the Presidency, a job he had never really wanted. When he left the White House in March, 1913, he told incoming President Woodrow Wilson, "I'm glad to be going. This is the lonesomest place in the world." That year Taft became professor of constitutional law at Yale University and was elected president of the American Bar Association. Taft's administration, engrossingly examined by Henry F. Pringle in this volume, was far more productive than it was given credit for at the time. In the words of one critic from that epoch, Taft suffered mostly from "too much Roosevelt." In 1921, Taft saw his dream finally realized when President Warren Harding named him Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The former President took over a court which had fallen far behind in its workload. Always the capable administrator, he quietly reorganized it into the Supreme Court as we know it to-day. In 1925, he was the principal force behind the passage of the Judiciary Act which granted the Court far greater control over both the kinds and the quantity of the cases it could rule on. The Life and Times of William Howard Taft is the definitive biography of one of the most unusual men in American history. Pringle, a New York newspaper reporter during Taft's term as Chief Justice, had already earned a Pulitzer Prize for Theodore Roosevelt: a Biography. He was widely expected to win a second for his 2-volume biography of the 27th President. This engaging conclusion to The Life and Times of William Howard Taft is an important addition to your Library of the Presidents. Exquisitely bound in genuine leather with accents of precious 22kt gold, each volume of this biography has all the luxurious features which make Easton Press editions the standard for fine books. These sumptuous volumes will handsomely enhance your private library. ********** This is the Easton Library of the Presidents reprints Hamilton's biography of the 27th President, originally published in 1939 (Volumes I & II) by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. For convenience, I have numbered these volumes based on the order of the Presidencies; numbers do not reflect the order in which the volumes were originally released. This set is missing the bookplate and Collector's Notes for Volume 1, however Volume 2 includes the original collector's notes and the unused original custom bookplate. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear to light brown leather covers, fading to the top edges. Cover gilt on each volume shows some wear but is still attractive. Some faint wear and mild foxing to the top, bottom, and outside edge gilt, the interior of each volume appears clean and unmarked. Accompanying documentation (collector's notes and bookplate for Volume II only) may display some ageing around the edges. A solid VG set.
