Description: Early Native American String of 195 Biconically Drilled Shell Beads, Strung. Recently acquired from the Outstanding Lifetime Artifacts Collection of Dr. Constantine Zariphes, Jr. of Rocky Hill, Connecticut.Authentic pre 1600, biconically drilled shell beads. I counted 195 beads on the string, and one loose broken bead. My count might be off by one or two, I only counted once. About 12” long (or 24” end to end), shell beads average about 1/4” diameter and 3/16” wide, necklace weighs about 1 oz. The auction catalog pictured showing provenance and this string’s photograph and listing (lot #274) is not included, though catalogs may still be available for purchase.Dr. Zariphes, Jr. began collecting Native American artifacts as a boy of seven, eventually serving as President of the Connecticut Archaeological Society for four years and was lauded by this society for twenty-five years of dedicated service. He passed away this past August at the ripe age of 92, and this nice string of ancient shell beads was one of the items I won at the first of several auctions of this important collection.
