Belfast Flown in Hercules of No 30 Sqn Personally Signed by Air Vice Marshal J D Spottiswood CB CVO AFC MA & Air Vice Marshal D Whittaker CB MBE Air Vice Marshal J D Spottiswood was a senior commander in the RAF. He fought in the WW11 as a flying boat pilot and then as a coastal reconnaissance squadron commander during Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa. He served as a station commander in the late 1940s and early 1950s before becoming a senior air commander in the late 1950s. As the Chief of the Air Staff in the early 1970s he had a major role in implementing the defence savings demanded by the Heath Government in the face of economic difficulties at the time. Air Vice Marshal D Whittaker joined the Royal Air Force as a National Serviceman in 1951 and trained as a pilot. On completion of training he spent the next ten years flying Day Fighter and Fighter/Ground Attack aircraft on squadrons in both the UK and Germany. After service with Headquarters 38 Group he spent two and a half years on the staff of Headquarters 24 Brigade in East Africa and Aden. Certified Copy No 0499 of 500.
