She's sort of a floating hotel-garage for miniature minesweepers. In the yawning cavity of her hull she carries up to 27 little boats, each fitted with minesweeping gear. On the edge of a mine field she slowly squats down in the water until she's half submerged, and the flotilla of babies comes sputtering out. These smaller craft form into echelons and sweep through the field, clearing paths for larger vessels to follow. Job done, they head back to the mother ship, swoop into the open stern and are tucked away in the huge room. As water flows out, the big vessel rises until the squadron in her belly rides high and dry. Then she steams away toward her next job.
