The quality of this excellent rendering by Francesco Piranesi was based on drawings and notes taken by his father Giovanni Baptista Piranesi and himself since 1770 and 1778. these views were printed at Paris 1804 and different issues appeared up to 1837. This etching is printed on excellent wove paper.Piranesi collaborated with the architect Louis Jean Desprez on a series of views of Pompeii that were not completed and probably were the basis for this later publication that was supported by Napoleon.
