The National Museum in Naples, as well as the collections in Florence and other places in Italy, provide a rich insight into the smaller art and industry of antiquity. We are filled with great admiration for the finely balanced, noble design of bronze objects, even if they are only those of the most common daily use, which in no way impairs their practical usability. Candelabra, lamps, lamp stands, mostly in the form of a tripod, vases, cooking, eating and drinking utensils, in which the sweeping formation of the profile, the neck, but especially the handles and grips, reaches a great perfection; couches, braziers, theater masks, armor and whatever else these things may be called: from all of them wafts the fresh breath of Greek beauty, which is not hidden in the wise proportions that are almost always present. The bronze statuettes are usually made up of several specially cast pieces. Many of them can be counted among the best creations of the ancient world because of their genuine artistic form. Fig. 1a. Das National - Museum zu Neapel, sowie die Sammlungen in Florenz und andern Orten Italiens geben einen reichen Einblick in die kleinere Kunst und Industrie im Altertum. Mit hoher Bewunderung erfüllt uns an den Bronce-Gegenständen, und seien es auch nur solche des gewöhnlichsten täglichen Gebrauchs, ihre fein abgewogene edle Gestaltung, welche die praktische Verwendbarkeit derselben in keiner Weise beeinträchtigt. Kandelaber, Lampen, Lampenständerchen, meist in Dreifufsform, Vasen, Koch-, Efs- und Trink-geräte, an denen die schwungvolle Bildung des Profils, des Halses, namentlich aber der Handhaben und Henkel eine grofse Vollendung erreicht; Ruhebetten, Kohlenbecken, Theatermasken, Rüstungen und wie diese Dinge sonst heissen mögen: aus ihnen allen weht der frische Hauch griechischer Schönheit, die sich auch in dem fast durchgängig vorhandenen weisen Mafshalten nicht verbirgt. Die Bronce-Statuetten sind in der Regel aus mehreren, besonders gegossenen Stücken zusammen-gesetzt.
