The book focuses on the authors derivation of the Morse-inequalities and in particular the mountain-pass-lemma of Morse-Tompkins and Shiffman for minimal surfaces and the proof of the existence of large (unstable) H-surfaces (Rellichs conjecture) due to Brezis-Coron, Steffen, and the author. Many related results are covered as well. More than the geometric aspects of Plateaus problem (which have been exhaustively covered elsewhere), the author stresses the analytic side. The emphasis lies on the variational method. Author Biography Michael Struwe is full Professor of Mathematics at ETH Zurich. Prof. Struwe was born on October 6, 1955 in Wuppertal, Germany. He studied mathematics at the University of Bonn. After receiving his doctorate in 1980, he was a member of the scientific staff in the special research sector 72 of the German research foundation and later an assistant at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn. He spent extended research visits in Paris and at the ETH Zurich. In 1984 he was awarded the Felix Hausdorff Prize of the University of Bonn.
