Therefore, they require a climate commonly found along these regions. To summarize they prefer, wet, humid, warm summers, which is when they grow larger carnivorous leaves that trap and digest insects. In winter, drier substrate, with cooler, humid air to prevent rot during their succulent leaf growth phase. Tropical Pinguicula Care: Water & Humidity: Only use mineral free water such as distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater. In summer, I place the pots in a tray of approx. 1” standing water and allowing it to dry out before refilling. During winter, I keep their soil slightly moist but allow them to dry out, they can handle more dryness especially with less light and lower temperatures. It is not recommended to wet the center of the pings when watering, it may cause rot. Watering frequency will depend on growing conditions such as soil mix, light, humidity, and temperature.Potting medium: Pinguicula prefer a mineral-airy mix that allows for rapid evaporation. My own mix consists of equal parts pumice, perlite, sand, vermiculite, and sometimes peat for the pings preferring more moisture. Light: Butterworts grow well with bright indirect light, morning or evening sunlight is best (this will bring out their brightest colors), please be aware that direct afternoon sunlight may scorch the leaves. Temperature & Dormancy: They like moderate temperatures between 50°F to 90°F but may handle temperatures down to 30°F if kept very dry, and up to 100°F with plenty of moisture. They have a winter growth phase; the shorter photoperiod and cooler temps will induce most tropical pings to grow non-carnivorous succulent leaves. Prevent overwatering during this phase as they will be susceptible to rot.Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
