This book was published in 1944 by the then-25-year-old former UM All-American and Heisman Trophy-winning halfback who followed up his stellar college football career with a stint as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces, during which he was the sole survivor of the crash of a bomber in South America, and was later shot down in a dogfight over China. The book is devoted almost entirely to his wartime experiences (his U of M playing days are dealt with in a single 20-page chapter), and the book is infused with expressions of his religious faith. After the war, Harmon played a couple of seasons professionally with the Los Angeles Rams. After that he started a long and successful career as a sports broadcaster. In 1944 he married actress Elyse Knox and they had three children with the most famous one being their son the actor Mark Harmon.
