Description: Pablo PICASSO Etching titled, Scene Biblique (David et Bethsabee?), Avec Bouffon au Chapeau a Deux Cornes (with jester in the two horned hat) Original signature in pencil in lower right margin347 Series: No. 3441968References: B. 1814, Ba. 1831Image size is 8 1/4" high by 10 1/4" wide & Framed piece is 33" high by 34 1/2" wide *** This example of the etching is from the edition of 17 Artist Proofs from the collection of Picasso's granddaughter, Marina. Her collector's stamp L. 3698 appears on the back of the work (verso). The "L. 3698" refers to the catalog of stamps and marks of distinguished collections. This book was compiled by Fritz Lugt, thus the 'L' reference. Obviously, with provenance from Marina Picasso, this work possesses quite a cachet. The majority of the graphic works in her collection were not otherwise annotated. Thus, there is not 'EA' or 'AP' annotation for Artist Proof in the lower left margin. However, it is documented in the exhaustive catalog of Picasso's etchings and linocuts, by Brigitte Baer, that there were 17 Artist Proofs aside from the regular Arabic numbered limited edition of 50 impressions. *** This artwork is an etching with aquatint on BFK Rives paper, with full margins. It is signed in pencil by Picasso and dated in the plate 25 September 1968 II (in reverse). It was published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris and printed by Crommelynck, Paris. It contains on the verso the Marina Picasso Inkstamp (L. 3698). In his ninth decade, Picasso created the remarkable group of etchings known as the 347 series in less than seven months, from March 16th to October 5th, 1968. (Just think of all the things that were going on throughout the work during that period!) Picasso collaborated with the master printers Piero and Aldo Crommellynck, in his private studio near Cannes, who brought in a special press from their atelier in Paris in 1963, But what prompted the massive 347 Series effort by Picasso so late in his life? He led a historic battle in his final years against the vogue of conceptual and theoretical "art", which became popular in the late 1960s. He rejected the conceptualist slogan consisting in that "everyone can be an artist, and everything can be art". He fought not by words, but by deeds, pointing the way back to the aesthetic ideal and technical excellence. While combining different cultures, icons and periods in this series, PIcasso was able to create a unifying them throughout: that of the narrator and observer rather than participant. The works are a panorama of compelling imagery including circus figures, musketeers, cabelleros, musicians and painters with their models, many charged with an erotic tone. Picasso's command of the challenging techniques of etching, engraving, dry-point and aquatint are revealed forcefully in the 347 works along with the highly personal and facile drawing ability he possessed in his late years. Commenting on the series the artist said, "I spend hour after hour while I draw, observing my creatures and thinking about the mad things they're up to; basically it is my way of writing fiction." In 'Picasso Suite 347', (de Baranano and Baer, Fundacion Bancaja 2000) Brigitte Baer describes the Suite 347 as one of the rare points in Picasso's career where "he looked not at his anxieties and deepest states of being ... but rather at what he perceived of the outside world." The availability of this rare work from the 347 Series offers one of the finest collecting opportunities present to those seeking to acquire original works by Picasso.
