Peter Pollack was a former director of the American Federation of the Arts, a nonprofit organization designed to foster the production and appreciation of the arts in America, and curator of photography at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1945 to 1957. Pollack was a lecturer and writer on photography and primitive art. His major work was “The Picture History of Photography,” published in 1958. Reviewing the book for The New York Times, Jacob Deschin wrote that Mr. Pollack was “more interested in the contributions of individuals than in technical advances, more partial to photographers than to inventors.” However, Mr. Deschin wrote, the author did “provide a visually satisfying and inspiring revelation of what photography is.” Mr. Pollack was also the author of “Understanding Primitive Art — Sula's Zoo.” Mr. Pollack attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the Bauhaus (which later became the Institute of Design) in Chicago. He served as director of the South Side Community Art Center in Chicago from 1939 to 1942 and was for a time field director of the American Red Cross in Iron and Egypt. In 1962 he was appointed director of the American Federation of Arts.
