Description: EXTRA INFOPHOTO GANTS HILL UNDERGROUND STATION (CENTRAL LINE). PICTURED IS THE EASTBOUND PLATFORM SIDE WALL OF WHITE TILES WITH BISCUIT COLOURED BORDERS AND SMALL STATION NAME ROUNDELS POSSIBLY ORIGINALS OR REPLICAS OF THE ORIGINALS. GANTS HILL UNDERGROUND STATION (CENTRAL LINE) 13 JULY 2024. THE LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARDâS NEW WORKS PROGRAMME OF 1935 PROPOSED EXTENDING THE CENTRAL LINE FROM ITS EASTERNMOST TERMINUS AT LIVERPOOL STREET THROUGH NEW TUNNELS TO STRATFORD AND THENCE (THROUGH FURTHER TUNNELS) OVER THE LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY (LNER) BRANCH FROM LEYTONSTONE TO EPPING AND ONGAR WHICH THE LPTB WOULD TAKE OVER. IN ADDITION THE NEW WORKS PROGRAMME PLANNED FOR A NEW LINE THROUGH TUBE TUNNELS FROM LEYTONSTONE (WHICH WOULD THEN BECOME A JUNCTION) VIA GANTS HILL TO LINK WITH THE LNER ILFORD â WOODFORD (ON THE LEYTONSTONE â EPPING LINE) BRANCH (THE FAIRLOP OR HAINAULT LOOP) AT NEWBURY PARK WHICH THE LPTB WOULD ALSO TAKE OVER FROM NEWBURY PARK. THIS ENVISAGED A COMPLETELY NEW STATION AT GANTS HILL. ALTHOUGH CONSIDERABLE WORKS TO THE EXTENSION AND STATIONS HAD BEGUN BY 1939 THE OUTBREAK OF WWII PUT COMPLETION ON HOLD. DURING THE WAR THE TUNNELS AT GANTS HILL WERE USED AS AN AIR RAID SHELTER BEFORE BEING OCCUPIED BY PLESSEY TO MANUFACTURE AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS. POST WAR WORKS RESTARTED AND THE FIRST STRETCH TO STRATFORD WAS OPENED IN DECEMBER 1946 TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE LEYTONSTONE STRETCH VIA LEYTON IN MAY 1947 AND THE NEW TUBE LINE FROM LEYTONSTONE TO NEWBURY PARK IN DECEMBER 1947. THE NEW STATION AT GANTS HILL WAS DESIGNED BY THE LPTBâS CONSULTANT ARCHITECT CHARLES HOLDEN UNUSUALLY WITHOUT A SURFACE BUILDING BUT WITH A SUB-SURFACE CONCOURSE BELOW A MAJOR TRAFFIC ROUNDABOUT. MOREOVER HOLDEN DESIGNED A MOSCOW METRO-STYLE BARREL-VAULTED PLATFORM CONCOURSE ON THE WISHES OF THE LPTB WHOSE ARCHITECTS HAD ACTED AS CONSULTANTS TO THE MOSCOW METRO THEN UNDER CONSTRUCTION. ALTHOUGH IT WAS OPENED IN DECEMBER 1947 THE STATION WAS NOT FINALLY COMPLETED UNTIL APRIL 1948. PLATFORM TILING WAS BY HAROLD STABLER. ORIGINALLY THE STATION WAS TO BE NAMED NORTH ILFORD THEN CRANBROOK BEFORE GANTS HILL WAS DECIDED UPON. SURPRISINGLY IT IS NOT A LISTED BUILDING. PICTURED IS THE TICKET HALL WITH ATTRACTIVE ART DECOR LIGHTS.
