Description: Photograph Notes: The Crucible and Lyceum theatres seem to have each others ear in this theatre-orientated corner of Tudor Square. "The Crucible" was opened in 1971 and then underwent a �15m refurbishment between 2007-09. The Lyceum, by contrast, has stood here since 1899. It experienced severe financial problems in the late 50s and eventually closed in 1969. At that point, despite being granted Grade II listed status in 1972, planning permission was sought for its demolition in 1975. The building was saved however, partly due to the efforts of the Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society. Over �12 million was spent restoring it between 1988-90, after which time it was reopened.
