Description: Photograph Notes: Nicholas Hawksmoor designed three churches in east London after the passing of the Fifty New Churches Act, 1711. They are unlike any other buildings in the country. Hawksmoor was one of the triumvirate of great Baroque architects during the brief flowering of the style in Britain (with his erstwhile partner, John Vanbrugh, and Thomas Archer). His churches show off the sculptural qualities of Baroque - whereas conventionally a structure would be seen as consisting of blank walls with holes punched in for doors and windows, Baroque can be seen as a way of making this distinction more fluid, with recessions and projections from the wall so that it no longer appears to be providing such a distinct framework. Christ Church is not as wilfully idiosyncratic as St George-in-the-East, but still the product of a very fertile imagination and possessing an unprecedented tower. It was built 1714-29.
