Description: Photograph Notes: Mining in Treak Cliff Hill started in the mid-18th century although the prime interest then was lead. However, by the end of the century blue john - a form of fluorite - had become fashionable for a number of decorative uses including vases, so eventually extraction of the semi-precious mineral became more important. It is only found in this form in the Hope Valley area of Derbyshire although similar deposits have been found in China. Today two caverns - the Blue John Cavern and this one at Treak Cliff - are open to the public and guided tours allow visitors to see the workings. A very limited amount of mining still takes place mainly for jewellery stone which can be bought in the visitor centre shop.
