Description: Sometimes known as Philodendron andreanum, Black Gold Philodendron, or Velour Philodendron, the Philodendron melanochrysum is a spectacular climbing epiphyte with the most stunning leaves. Most are acquired when young, but this species has leaves that are velutinous - they look and feel like velvet. The leaves will also change shape and elongate up to 3 feet as the plant climbs. Melanochrysum is native from Costa Rica to Colombia into Ecuador and down to Peru and known to be slightly variable and often confused with Philodendron gigas. 4" Pot (may be bottom, mid, or top cutting originally) *You will receive a plant similar to the one pictured. Plants may or may not have dried ends, torn/broken leaves, but is unlikely. Not all leaves or flowers of this plant may be present when shipping as seen in the photos. This plant may show high levels of stress from transit through yellow, drooping, or dropping of leaves/flowers. It may take an additional 2-3 weeks to recover (provide proper humidity during the recovery time). --------------------------------------------- Foliage:Juvenile leaves will vary from adult leaves. Leaves are velutinous, elongate with age, and are medium to dark green. Petioles are terete (round). Inflorescence:Yes - will not bloom indoors. Zoned: 10-11 Environment: Medium to high humidity. It will usually tolerate indoor levels, but with slight difficulty, and will appreciate additional humidity if available. Grows best in 60-85 degrees F and will tolerate as low as 45 degrees for a very short period of time. Cold-sensitive and will show it when upset. Light: Bright indirect lightworks best. Can handle somewhat lower light conditions, but only if necessary and not prolonged. Do not leave in direct, all-day or expose to strong afternoon sun. Outdoors place in full to part shade. Soil:Good quality aroid mix or well-draining peat based mix. Drainage is a must. Water: When watering, take care to fully drench the soil and allow excess to run through the drainage holes. Depending on growing container and medium, watering may be every 5-10 days. Allow soil to dry slightly before watering, the plant does not like constant "wet feet". Soggy or overly damp soil may encourage leaf drop and disease; excessively dry conditions may stunt growth. Decrease water in winter. Fertilizer: Though not required, for larger and faster growth, use a balanced fertilizer every two-four weeks during the growing period. Notes:This plant is considered toxic and should not be consumed. Plants are shipped with light wrapping and padding according to import/export regulations.
