Maxs new book is very comprehensive, so comprehensive that it tells the story of the history of what it means to be human and "in the world." The book provides not only the traditional foundations of phenomenology in terms of philosophy/ies and method/s, but also, challenging us to reflect and dialogue about new thoughts or ideas that we may not have thought about. Maxs use of etymology is so profound. One can put themselves in his stories and explanations of the lifeworld and "see" meaning at a very deep level. I highly recommend this book to faculty and students who are in search of a scholarly approach to philosophy and method in phenomenology. But I also recommend this book for all those who are in search of a fuller understanding of the meaning of meaning. " --Marilyn A. Ray, Florida Atlantic University (Emeritus)"Max van Manen is a great teacher and a true maestro in the craft of phenomenology and phenomenological writing....The book is comprehensive and covers an ambitious range of topics, but keeps returning to its main focus: that of understanding the phenomenology of practice....In the way of a master teacher, van Manen shows us how to do the phenomenology of practice by himself engaging in thoughtful and reflective practice of phenomenological pedagogy....For any serious student of phenomenology--and in particular those engaged in the phenomenology of practice--this book should prove an essential resource and a challenging but rewarding guide." --Irena Madjar, Qualitative Health Research"Throughout his academic career, educator Max van Manen has been one of the most accessible commentators on phenomenological method. [This book] is a masterly account of the nature of phenomenology and the lived experience of doing phenomenological research." --Environmental & Architectural Phenomenology"I think the labour of this extraordinarily deep and comprehensive text should bear fruit in its immediate uptake for any researchers planning to present the lived experience of a phenomenon without drifting too quickly into conceptual analysis. The author has profoundly enriched researcher practitioners, seeking to understand and use phenomenological approaches..." --Peter Willis, Phenomenology & Practice Review Quote "Throughout his academic career, educator Max van Manen has been one of the most accessible commentators on phenomenological method. [This book] is a masterly account of the nature of phenomenology and the lived experience of doing phenomenological research."
