(PCCO) labels.The New Navy Double Action Cal. .38 revolver made by Colt and Remington was the standard sidearm for the Army and Navy from the late 1880s until the adoption of the M1911 Automatic Pistol made by Colt in 1911. The cartridge used in the revolver underwent numerous improvements and upgrades at Frankford Arsenal including the switch to smokeless powder, from black powder, in 1900. In April 1909, production contracts for the revised cartridge were given to the United States Cartridge Co., Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Peters Cartridge Co., Western Cartridge Co., and Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Frankford Arsenal continued production as well. With the start of WWI, and shortage of M1911 pistols and ammunition, the Cal. .38 Revolver and ammunition was once again pressed into service for the duration of the conflict, then retired for good.
