PETER COOPER - AUTOGRAPH ENDORSEMENT SIGNED - HFSID 23318 PETER COOPER Cooper handwrote this endorsement of a Mr. White with H. J. Raymond. Autograph endorsement signed: "H. J. Raymond." and "Peter Cooper", 1p, 7¾x9¾, with embossed crown in upper left corner. Endorsed by Cooper: "I chearfully [sic] concur/in the above/recommendation". Also endorsed by Raymond: "From my Knowledge of Mr. Shankland I very cheerfully endorse what Mr. White says of him and concur in the request he makes." Cooper (1791-1883) designed and built the first American locomotive, named Tom Thumb, in 1830; was the promoter and financial backer of Cyrus Field in the laying of the Atlantic cable; and founded Cooper Union in New York City (1859) "for the advancement of science and art". The school is still giving free courses in science, chemistry, electricity, engineering and art. In 1876, Cooper was the Greenback party nominee for President, receiving 81,737 votes out of 8.4 million votes cast. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Handwriting and Raymond's signatures are lightly smeared but legible. Signatures touch. Top left and bottom right corners are missing. Small nick in bottom edge. Page was neatly torn from a pad or notebook on left edge. Tape remnants on left edge on verso. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally. Otherwise, fine condition.
