Embossed cloth hard covers with gilt spine titles and detailed gilt illustration on the front board, 12mo, two color lithographs of Francesco and Rosa Madiai, xii + 166pp. >br> The book details a notorious case of religious persecution and imprisonment of Protestants in 1851 in Florence by the Grand Ducal government of Tuscany, Italy, during the reaction following the 1848 revolutions. Francesco and Rosa Madiai were a middle-aged couple from Florence who furnished apartments which were frequently rented to visitors from England; their imprisonment by Papal authorities excited great indignation among various Protestant groups in both England and America. Included here are many letters written by the Madiai to the compilers of this volume, and to a friend Mr. Chapman who was also much involved in their plight. Scarce.
