Although the book was published before the 850 debut or before the 1972 750 with reinforced cases and crankshaft roller bearings the mechanical information is still valuable. It is a book that assumes one has a mechanical aptitude, as it deals with performance modifications through the use of specific machining and measurement tools. Still though there are many common sense revelations and tool building remedies. The book also details tear downs with dismantling tips. Many of the old remedies like safety wiring the screw in exhaust collars or intake port polishing are useful for the later Commandos. Current modern upgrades like the new adjustable Isolastics, performance exhaust systems, electronic ignition, steering damper kits and all kinds of "go fast" items etc. etc. have surpassed what was available back in the day when this book was written. However back in the day Paul Dunstall and this book made the Commando legendary. It is a great read. If you use the knowledge gained from this book, your Commando will benefit.
