Description: This is a vintage pair of carved wood Bankura horses. Each horse standsapproximately 12" tall, 4" long, and 2" wide. Please note this is an interesting pair as one has eyes and one doesn't. I wonder if this has any significant religous meaning in the ceremonies, but haven't been able to find any thing out on this. Also, one was carved with it bark still on, and is some has come off on the back neck. and one tail has some missing paint. Otherwise this pair is in good vintage condition, but please refer to the pictures to judge for yourself. Bankura horses were terracotta horses that were once used more often for religious purposes. This art originated in Bankura district in the Indian State of West Bengal. These horses are known for their symmetric shape and rounded curves given to their body.It has been praised for “its elegant stance and unique abstraction of basic values.” Originally used for village rituals, it now adorns drawing rooms around the world as symbols of Indian folk-art It is the logo of All India Handicrafts.
