BIOGRAPHY: Juan Maldonado was one of the preeminent Puerto Rican artists of the 20th century and one of the founders of the Nuyorican art movement of the 1960s. Born in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico on May 13, 1941, he passed away in his home in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico on December 16, 2016, after a prolonged illness. He was 75-years-old. Maldonado joined the Army and was stationed in Europe during his tour of duty (1960-1965); his responsibilities included dismantling nuclear warheads, a task that required great manual dexterity and high military clearance. Mr. Maldonado taught this very dangerous and specialized skill to other military personnel. He took advantage of his location in Europe to study Renaissance oil painting techniques utilized by the Old Masters, enabling Maldonado to become a realist painter and polishing his skills at the Universitá de Perugia. After his military discharge, Mr. Maldonado completed his studies and apprenticeship with travels through Italy, Austria and France to examine first-hand the work of European masters – particularly favoring the work and style of Leonardo da Vinci. When he moved to New York City, he became the Artist-In-Residence of the Friends of Puerto Rico Cultural Center (1969-1972), occupying the position that had recently been vacated by Carlos Osorio, one of the founders of Taller Boricua in East Harlem. He established the Oller–Campeche Gallery at the Friends of Puerto Rico Cultural Center, making it one of the first professional exhibition spaces in New York City exhibiting the works of Latino artists who were mostly excluded from the commercial gallery scene. In his studio at Friends of Puerto Rico, he mentored several young artists. Mr. Maldonado became a much sought after portrait painter, receiving more than 400 commissions from a wide circle of public and prominent individuals across the United States and the Caribbean. He is known for the Miller Brewing Company Hispanic Heritage Calendar where, for more than a decade, he painted original portraits of prominent Hispanic leaders in education, business, science and the arts. The 136 portraits constitute a unique memory of Hispanic leaders of the 1980's. Many of his commissioned portraits were completed during his Artist-In-Residency at The Bronx Museum of the Arts (1972-1986). The late Congressman Robert Garcia nominated Mr. Maldonado to the US Postal service to design a commemorative stamp of Luis Muñoz Marin, the first elected Governor of Puerto Rico. The five-cent stamp was issued February 18, 1990. Luis R. Cancel, the former Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs [and a student of Maldonado] remembered his friend and mentor. “Juan was an artist of extraordinary intelligence and talent and yet he lived his life embodying the values of “El Jíbaro de la montaña,” (the mountain farmer) as he was fond of telling me: humble, generous, and self-effacing. During his entrepreneurial period or when he was flush with cash, he would purchase the artwork of other artists, like Carlos Osorio, and share his wealth. I will always be grateful for the principles of community service that he instilled in me.” Maldonado's works entered many private and public collections including Miller Brewing Company, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Office of the Mayor City of New York, Museum of the City of New York, Art Brokers Bernard Bikkers (Canada), Congressional Hispanic Caucus (Washington, DC), Mr. & Mrs. Otto Mueller (Switzerland), V. Suarez Importadores (Puerto Rico), and Mrs. Tatti McClausky (Puerto Rico), El Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Santurce, PR), among others. He dedicated the last 10 years of his life to fine-tuning his book, Pre-Physicalism: a Painting Concept, in which he documents his art process and artist’s narrative. The digitized book draft was left unedited. He is survived by Elva Ortiz-Alvarez, his beautiful wife and dedicated companion of 54-years who Maldonado always lauded as his muse and who often posed for his paintings.
