Harry Joseph Bowman (July 17, 1949 – March 3, 2019), also known as "Taco", was an American outlaw biker and gangster who served as the international president of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club between 1984 and 1999. During his tenure as president, the club had chapters in more than 30 cities in the United States and some 20 chapters in at least four other countriesConsidered one the most notorious motorcycle gang leaders in U.S. history, Bowman escalated a biker war between the Outlaws and the Hells Angels in the 1990's. He became the 453rd fugitive listed on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list after he was indicted on federal racketeering and murder charges in August 1997. After 18 months as a fugitive, Bowman was apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) near Detroit in June 1999. He was convicted in Tampa, Florida, in April 2001 of the murders of gang members, firebombings, racketeering, conspiracy and various drug and firearm offenses. The Outlaws Motorcycle Club, incorporated as the American Outlaws Association (AOA) is a one percenter motorcycle gang that was formed in McCook Illinois in 1935. Membership in the in the US is limited to men who own American-made motorcycles of a particular size, although in Europe motorcycles from any country are allowed so long as they are in the chopper style. Their main rivals are the Hell's Angels, giving rise to a phrase used by Outlaws members, "ADIOS" (the Spanish word for "goodbye", but in this case doubling as an acronym for Angels Die In Outlaw States")... The Outlaws Motorcycle Club was established out of Matilda's Bar on old Route 66 in McCook Illinois, a southwestern suburb of Chicago, in 1935. The club stayed together during World War 2, but like most organizations at that time, their activities were limited. In the 1950s, the club's logo was changed; a small skull replaced a winged motorcycle, and Old English-style letters were adopted. This design was embroidered on a black shirt and hand painted on leather jackets. In 1954, the Crossed Pistons were added to the original small skull. This design was embroidered on a black western-style shirt with white piping. The movie The Wild One with Marlon Brando influenced this backpatch. The Skull and Crossed Pistons were redesigned in 1959, making them much larger with more detail. The A.O.A. logo was adopted as an answer to the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) logo. A number of one percenter motorcycle clubs are called the "Outlaws", e.g. New Zealand.These are not part of the AOA and share only the name, having a different patch design and colors. In some countries, independent Outlaw MCs have joined, or been "patched over" to the now worldwide club. The Outlaws MC of New Zealand, established in Napier in 1968, have since "patched over" to the international club The Outlaws became a member of the 1% percenter of Motorcycle Clubs in 1963. The club featured in a work of photojournalism called The Bikeriders published in 1967 by Danny Lyon, a collection of photographs and interviews documenting the lifestyle of members of the club in the early 1960s. The Outlaws MC in the UK grew from a number of smaller clubs that came together in July 1992. Several Midlands-based MCs - Cycle Tramps (Birmingham), Pariahs (Leicestershire), Road Tramps (Derbyshire), Slaves (Coventry), Pagans (Warwickshire), Eagles (Staffordshire) and the Wolves Outlaws (Cheltenham) - formed into the fledgling 'Outlaws Midlands MC' with a new emblem (a skull with Native American headdress (featuring feathers bearing the colors of the clubs that joined the new Outlaws). The new Outlaws became the largest MC in the UK with more members than the British Hell's Angels. The Outlaws grew further by patching over several other smaller MCs in both England and Wales and the bottom rocker was updated to either 'England' or 'Wales' to reflect the location of the new chapters. In 2000, the UK Outlaws patched over to join the American Outlaws Association (AOA). There are currently around 30 Outlaw chapters in the UK.
