Whatever became of…?, by Richard Lamparski. New York: Crown Publishers Inc., 1986. Tenth Series. In 1922, Hal Roach released the first of the Our Gang comedies, filling the cast with ordinary kids instead of child stars. In all, Roach filmed 88 silent and 80 talking versions of the comedy, with a shifting cast as individuals outgrew the youthful roles. Although MGM took over the franchise in 1938 and continued making Our Gang until 1944, the films without Roach's guidance were generally not as successful. The original Our Gang series proved popular again on TV in the 1950s and after, now called The Little Rascals because MGM owned the original name. GORDON "PORKY" LEE, who eventually appeared in 35 Our Gang films, made his debut in "Little Sinners". "O'tay" was his trademark expression. As "Butch", TOMMY BOND played the bully in many episodes, while bedeviling other actors like Laurel and Hardy with his young brat roles. DOROTHY DeBORBA joined the gang in the early talking phase (1930-1933) as "Echo". MILDRED KORNMAN, later a fashion model and the younger sister of original Rascal Mary Kornmann, debuted in 1926. DELMAR WATSON, from a family of child actors, appeared in many films of the 1930s and early 1940s, including My Little Chickadee and Young Mr. Lincoln. DARWOOD KAYE debuted in the 1937 Our Gang film Glove Taps and became a regular character in the film series. He played "Waldo" a competitor for the affection of Darla Hood in over twenty Our Gang films between 1937 and 1940. SIDNEY KIBRICK made his film debut in the "Our Gang" comedies in 1935, appearing in five films that year, including Little Sinner, in which he starred. Billed as "Woim", his long list of "Our Gang" films include Bored of Education and Pay As You Exit (both 1936), Rushin' Ballet (1937) and Dog Daze (1939, the last year he appeared with the group). As "Woim" he played the sidekick of bully "Butch" (Tommy Bond). GEORGE EMMETT "SPANKY" McFARLAND played pudgy Spanky in the film Our Gang comedies from the age of three (1928-1942). Screen and television actor Clint Walker (1927-2018) is best known for his role as Cheyenne Bodie on Cheyenne, the 1955-1963 series that popularized the Western genre. Walker would later reprise the role in an episode of TV's Kung Fu: The Legend Continues in 1995. He also starred in a number of films, including The Ten Commandments (1956), None But the Brave (1965), The Night of the Grizzly (1966) and The Dirty Dozen (1967), and voiced a role in the 1998 film, Small Soldiers. He has also been seen in made-for-TV movies, the miniseries Centennial (1978), and in guest roles in several TV shows, including a recurring role as Cal Jasper on 77 Sunset Strip (1963).
