Description: This auction is for a Original WWI US Navy Overseas Cap Naval Aviator Wings Badge Very nice original item. This is a gilt bronze set of 1-1/2" naval aviator wings in the style of the 1st pattern or type 1 wings. The wing is die-stamped and very well detailed. UN-pierced anchor as expected for early WWI wings. US lettering was applied prior to the gilt, and the wear pattern as can be seen in the images is consistent with what would be expected. Very fine pin-back fastener on the reverse with safety C-catch. The pin tapers as it reaches its point which is an unusual but high quality aspect. Unmarked on reverse. Overall a very well made and detailed wing. While the 1st pattern wings was only around for a month in late or so in late 1917 per regulations, and was in sterling, I am assuming these are a very early set of wings which may have "crossed-over" the regs. They might also have been a private add by request to a jeweler, although as mentioned above, the US was added prior to the gilding was done to the wings. Additionally, the US is die-cut which indicates a larger production rather than a jeweler one off. Please feel free to ask any questions.
