Description: For sale is an original woodcut depicting the crucifixion of Christ but with a nude woman attending. This impression was created and printed by controversial artist E.M. Washington who just may be the greatest woodcut master of all time. This artist claimed that his grandfather (also named E.M. Washington) was the printer for such noted woodcut artists as Rockwell Kent, Lynd Ward, Fritz Eichenberg, etc. It later came to light that images purportedly by his grandfather were made by his own hand and that he created a prolific amount of woodengravings and woodcuts that could not be differentiated from those of the century's greatest master engravers. This appears to be one of those "copies" (hand carved and printed) that looks identical to an illustration from the early 1900's. The rendering looks very much like the work of Frans Masereel. The artist E.M. Washington was known to research images and illustrations from the past that he could recreate them. In this particular image, the letters MIENK appear on the right. Research suggests that MIENK was a Hungarian art movement (1908-1911) that involved a circle of Impressionists and Naturalists - similar to Fauvism. It is likely that a follower of that movement created the image of the crucified Christ and a nude woman in the early part of the 20th century. The name of the artist is unknown but the image must have been seen and copied by Washington. This image was probably created in the last 20 years. It is signed in pencil "E.M.Washington" at the lower left (photo 2). The piece measures 6 inches high and 4 and 1/2 inches across. This is not a reproduction, giclee, offset lithograph or anything other than an original print from a handcarved block by a master wood engraver who signed it. There is no edition number but it is likely from a small number of proofs. The bleedthrough of the image can be seen in photo 6. Like Felicien Rops who interposed sexuality and religious symbols, this miniature piece is thought provoking and well executed.
