BRAND/COMPANY: Loterie Nationale France. The French National Lottery was created in May 1933. Its dividends were slated for a retirement fund in favor of the war veterans. The French National Lottery became widely popular after the media coverage of barber Paul Bonhoure's win of five million francs in the first draw. Beginning in 1952 the Loterie Nationale faced a tough competition from the PMU (horse races). The last drawing of the Loterie Nationale took place in December 1990, when it is was replaced by the more and more popular Loto. In a very enlightening article "Loterie nationale : Mythes et symboles" written in 1969, the influential French journalist and author of many books on consumerism, education and advertising proposes an in-depth analysis of posters commissioned by the French lottery. The lottery had hired some of France's best designers, developing a corpus of some of the most effective posters in history. STORY/DESCRIPTION: Representing a young girl Little Red Riding Hood, and the hungry Big Bad Wolf. She’s smiling innocently at him. I will bring him a jar of honey, a cake and a ticket of the NATIONAL LOTTERY. / Je lui porte un pot de miel, une galette et un billet de la LOTERIE NATIONALE. "Little Red Riding Hood" the famous European fairy tale origins can be traced back to the 10th century to several European folk tales, including one from Italy called The False Grandmother (Italian: La finta nonna), later written among others by Italo Calvino in the Italian Folktales collection; the best known versions were written by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. The story has been changed considerably in various retellings and subjected to numerous modern adaptations and readings. Changed once again, in our artist, GAD’s image, Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge) is holding a Lottery ticket, which has caught the attention of the wolf. The implication is that he values it more than her. With her gift of a lottery ticket, she will be saved.
