It operated in two periods: before the rise of communism in 1944–1948.The Democratic Party (DS) was founded in September 1944 during the Slovak National Uprising. Its founders included Ján Ursíny, Jozef Lettrich, Martin Kvetko, Ján Bendík, Fedor Hodža and Ján Lichner. Before the elections in 1946, democratic forces united under its brand. In the elections, the Democratic Party in Slovakia won with 62% of the votes. The rise of the communists in 1948 marked its end. Most of the leading officials of the DS emigrated abroad. Jozef Lettrich, Martin Kvetko and Fedor Hodža were among them. Those who remained in Czechoslovakia were imprisoned and persecuted by the communists.
