Description: This listing is for each of 4 original medium-sized offset color lithographs by American superrealist artist Siegfried Gerhard Reinhardt (1925-1984) from a series made for the Encyclopaedia Britannica (not all of the 5 lithographs together, only each of them).I have another listing where I offer 3 other lithographs of the same series, please check it out. I didn’t know about the art of Siegfried Gerhard Reinhardt before running into these lithographs at an antique fair, and was instantly stopped by them. They offer a unique and intriguing mix of realism and dreamlike, sometimes even psychedelic quality (in the vein of surrealism), which definitely fits the label of superrealism, commonly used to characterize Reinhardt’s work. One understands that these works describe aspects of nature or of human life, with a realistic, almost scientific eye (as they were commissioned as illustrations for the Encyclopaedia Britannica), but at the same time cannot stay indifferent to the poetic or even orphic spirit that imbues these images and gives them a strong appeal of mystery. DimensionsOverall 22”½ x 16”Sight 18”½ x 13”¼ Artist’s biography Siegfried Gerhard Reinhardt (July 31, 1925 in Eydkuhnen, Germany – October 24, 1984 in St. Louis, Missouri) was a prolific artist and teacher, based for most of his career at Washington University in St. Louis, where he had taken his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1950. He was also a prominent member of the St. Louis Artists Guild. He was a pioneer in combining elements of realism and surrealism in a style known sometimes as superrealism.Emigrating with his parents from Germany to the US when he was 3 in 1928, Siegfried Gerhard Reinhardt was naturalized American in 1936 and enrolled in the US Army in 1944.It is then that he had an opportunity to start his career as an illustrator for the daily American military newspaper Stars and Stripes. Though he had not received any formal artistic education, his work gained so much notice that by 1950, he was included in a list of nineteen important young American artists made by Life Magazine. From 1949 to 1984 he worked with the St. Louis stained glass artisan Emil Frei in the design of windows, including the (1960) Easter Window in the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, in Sunset Hills, Missouri. In the late 1950s, he produced the painting “Man of Sorrows” in a series of seven installments on local public television station KETC, explaining his decisions and techniques to viewers as he went. From 1955 through 1970, Reinhardt taught at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. Reinhardt also served as artist in residence at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale from 1950 to 1954 then again from 1968 to 1969, and St. Louis Community College Meramec (Kirkwood) from 1971 through his death. His works have sold for up to $25,500.00 (as in the case of "Woman with Cross", painted in 1947).Additional works are housed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Vatican Museum Picture Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.Reinhardt died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 59.
