THERE ARE SLIGHT DEFECTS ON THE CANVAS DUE TO TIME AND SIGNS OF WEAR AND TEAR ON THE FRAME, BUT EVERYTHING IS IN GOOD OVERALL CONDITION.MEASUREMENTS OF THE PAINTING: CM 50 HEIGHT X CM 70 WIDTHFRAME MEASURES: CM 73 HEIGHT X CM 93 WIDTH PAINTING DATED 1987, OIL ON CANVAS, BY THE MASTER OF THE NEAPOLITAN SCHOOL FERNANDO MASI, WHO OFFERS US A WORK OF GREAT DEPTH, EXTREMELY MODERN, WHERE HE SKILFULLY MIXES HIS PREDILECTION FOR THE SURREALIST AND ABSTRACT LANGUAGE, WITH HIS PECULIAR STYLISTIC AND CHROMATIC CODE (WHERE THE INTENSE RED AND BLUE COLOURS STAND OUT).EVERY BRUSHSTROKE IS A RECOVERY OF CLASSICISM, BUT WITH A CONTINUOUS FUTURISTIC INNOVATION OF INTERPRETATION OF EXISTENCE, LEANING TOWARDS DISCOVERIES OF INVENTED PANORAMAS AND LANDSCAPES, BUT ALWAYS REFERABLE TO A REALITY THAT WE ALONE WITH OUR INTERIORITY CAN READ. IN SOME CASES, HIS PAINTING APPEARS MYSTICAL, BUT PROJECTED TOWARDS A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE WORLD, WHICH SUCCEEDS WITH GREAT EXCEPTIONALITY IN SURPASSING THE FIGURATIVE WHILE REMAINING WITHIN THE RIGOROUS SPHERE OF LEGIBILITY. FERNANDO MASI IS NOT AN EASY MAN AND ARTIST. HIS FERVID CONTRADICTIONS - HIS PESSIMISM RESOLVING ITSELF IN GLIMPSES OF LIGHT - AND HIS DOUBTS ARE ALSO THOSE OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES. IN ANY PAINTING THE ARTIST OFFERS US - AND ESPECIALLY IN THIS ONE - HE ALWAYS TRIES TO INTERPRET A GENRE FROM ABSTRACT TO SURREALISM, FROM FIGURATIVE TO METAPHYSICAL. MASI TRANSLATES THE CONTRADICTIONS AND CONSTRAINTS OF REALITY ONTO HIS CANVASES IN MYSTERIOUS AND MYSTICAL PLACES, IN ANONYMOUS FIGURES WITH WHOM, HOWEVER, ONE IMMEDIATELY EMPATHISES BECAUSE OF THE ENORMOUS HUMANITY THEY DISPLAY, IN DESOLATE LANDSCAPES, IN THE INTRICATE GEOMETRIES OF OLD ABANDONED VILLAGES. "IT IS THE EPITOME OF HUMAN SOLITUDE, BUT IT IS ALSO A TRIBUTE TO THE MARGINALISED, TO THOSE WHO ARE DENIED EVERYTHING, EVEN THE TRANQUILLITY OF NOTHINGNESS," SAYS THE MASTER. EVERYTHING SEEMS SUSPENDED AND MEANINGLESS. FERNANDO MASI´S BRUSHES DESCRIBE THE ANGUISH OF THE LONELINESS OF BEING AND THE FEAR OF DEATH. MASI´S PICTORIAL LANGUAGE ALWAYS LIES IN A DIMENSION POISED BETWEEN REALITY AND ABSTRACTION, BETWEEN OBJECTIVITY AND SUBJECTIVITY. IN FACT, HIS WORKS ARE GENERALLY COMPOSED IN A FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, BUT TOTALLY TRANSFIGURED IN THE ARTIST'S POETICS. AND THUS THE ENTIRE COMPOSITION OF THE WORK UNDERGOES ANTI-NATURALISTIC FORCING IN AN EXPRESSIVE KEY, BOTH IN TERMS OF THE FORMAL SYNTHESIS OF THE SUBJECTS AND, ABOVE ALL, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF COLOUR. IN FACT, MASI'S WORKS ARE ALWAYS CONTEXTUALISED IN ATMOSPHERES FULL OF COLOUR AND PICTORIAL GESTURES. BIOGRAPHICAL AND ARTISTIC BACKGROUND: Born in Irpinia (Campania), he obtained his first recognitions in Modena (his adopted city of painting), followed by exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He signed the Manifesto for the 47th edition of the International Fair in Bologna (Campania and Basilicata) and then landed in New York (USA) in 1998 with a major exhibition at New York University. His art embraces all themes and all techniques, capable of moving from canvases to sculpture, from graphics to ceramics, and his fame as a great 'murales' artist finds its affirmation starting with his presence at the biennial 'painted wall' in Dozza Imolese (Bologna). He has over 100 solo exhibitions held in Italy and abroad to his credit. Since 1990, the year of his one-man exhibition held in the halls of the 'Galleria Ferrari' museum in Maranello, he began a cycle of paintings dedicated to 'Formula 1' and the 'world of Ferraris', from which he took the pseudonym 'the painter of Ferraris'. His works are present in public and private collections. His first personal exhibition was in Avellino in 1965. In 1968, he opened a studio in Modena (which became his adopted city of painting) and received continuous approval and encouragement for his art. The search for his own personal artistic expressiveness made him experiment with the techniques and roots of the various movements that have marked the history of art. The affirmation came with an exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, where encounters with Carlo Levi, Giorgio De Chirico, Cesare Zavattini and Trombadori confirmed his artistic identity. Years later, art historian Raffaele Causa defined his painting as 'Geniale'. From 1972 to 1980, he travelled the length and breadth of Italy proposing his painting, which was gradually refined in technique and subject matter. He narrated contemporary history, dwelling above all on the conditions of the peasants and fishermen of the south, the villages of the Apennines, the desolate countryside of Lucania, and wild seascapes. In 1974, Galleria Pace in Milan hosted a solo exhibition of his work and dedicated the first monograph to him, edited by art critic Mario Monteverdi. Numerous personal exhibitions followed in Florence, Venice, Trento-Castello d'Avio-organised by the FAI, Ventimiglia, Bordighera-personal exhibition at the Palazzo del Parco and participation in the Salone Internazionale dell'Umorismo, Sanremo, Avellino, Modena, Tivoli-Roma, Vignola-personal exhibition at the castle, Parma, Elba, Carpi-personal exhibition at the Sala Gialla, Capri, Ischia, Sorrento-personal exhibition at Sorrento Palace and participation in the International Film Festival, Ferrara, Porto Cesareo, Lecce, Brescia, Bergamo, EXPO 2015 Milan-guest in the Pavilion" Piazza Irpinia", Spoleto Arte 2015 curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, ect. Then, the 1980 Irpinia earthquake marked his social and artistic life. In 1981, he moved with his family to Sassuolo, not far from the Ferrari track in Fiorano-Maranello and fascinated by the roar of the red car, he was tempted to paint it, almost a speed challenge. His brush runs as fast on the canvas as formula 1 cars run. His stay in Emilia lasts two years, because the roots of his land are a strong reminder. In 1990, the top management of Ferrari and the Maranello municipality hosted a major exhibition of his work at the inauguration of the Ferrari Gallery in Maranello and Piero Ferrari told him: 'we chose you because you make the Ferrari run even from a standstill'. The same exhibition was repeated in 1999 at New York University in New York, with great success. In 1996, he was awarded the honour of 'Cavaliere' of the Italian Republic - Presidency of the Italian Republic and in 1999 he was awarded the honour of 'Ufficiale' of the Italian Republic. However, his artistic career has not only been appreciated in Italy. He has held several exhibitions abroad: Barcelona, Frankfurt, Monte Carlo, Menton, Bagnol sur Seze, Bucharest, Zurich, Delray Beach, Miami Beach, Brussels -Belgium -Hall of the European Parliament- , ect. Several first prizes and selections, signing regional and national posters, collaboration with the E.P.T. of Avellino and Naples, Chamber of Commerce of Avellino and Bologna, illustrating magazines and coining the first and only tourist medal of Irpinia. He has created numerous MURALES in various locations in Italy and abroad that leave a mark of a painting inspired by social and political themes. Magazines of all kinds and Italian and foreign newspapers have covered his painting. Fernando Masi says: 'In art there are no teachers and to become an artist there are no schools or masters. ARTISTS are BORN! It is up to each one of us to discover that gift of God through trial, error and comparison. Mine is a painting of impulse, of jet, a fast, immediate painting, a direct technique with vital explosions, with stormy, explosive effects that create vibrant images and movement as fast as the wind, without ever being influenced by the market or by critics or by improvised artists influenced by new trends, remaining a faithful interpreter of my painting, an instinctive and futuristic painting: REAL PAINTING. I consider myself to be a multifaceted painter with an expressionistic/futuristic tendency, more of an artist than a painter, I move with ease from the figure to landscape, still life, social and topical themes. (....) I feel that I tell stories, divided among them, but with a common sense, lived stories, stories of our time, which tell of a culture: ours'. The unforgettable Nomadi singer, also a painter, 'Augusto Daolio' dedicated this sentence to him: 'In the cosmos that your painter's eyes investigate, the pictorial cosmos created by your artist's hands, is populated by storms. In your figures lives the storm within and all around'.
