Original Gouache Abstract Epressionist Painting Attributed to John Von Wicht

Description: John Von Wicht (1888-1970) is a well-listed German-American painter, printmaker and mosaicist. At 17, he apprenticed in a painting and decorating shop and he spent his evenings sketching from nature.From 1909-1910, he studied applied arts at the Privatschule of Hesse-Darmstadt. He later won a three year art scholarship to the Royal School of Fine Arts in Berlin where he received his B.A in 1912. During WWI, the artist was wounded and paralyzed and spent much of his recovery time in book designing and illustration work. He emigrated to the USA in 1923 and settled in Brooklyn, N.Y. where he found work with a lithography company and as an artisan making stained glass and mosaics. In 1936, he became a U.S. citizen and was soon hired as a mural painter by the Federal Arts Project/WPA. He collaborated with several abstract American artists like Stuart Davis, Louis Schanker and Byron Browne in designing an important mural which is now in the Brooklyn Public Library. Von Wicht combined geometric abstraction and dense color in his paintings and he exhibited with the American Abstract Artist in 1939. He exhibited in several galleries in the late 40's and during WW2 he captained a supply barge ferrying food to army ships in N.Y. harbor. At that time, harbor scenes began to appear in his abstractions. During the 1950's, his sensuously colored geometric abstractions gave way to loose expressionistic forms. He exhibited his prints regularly with the N.Y. Painter-Printmakers and the "14 Painter-Printmakers Group and he participated in a traveling exhibition of his work which initiated in Paris. In the 1960's he purchased a home in Majorca and spent the rest of his life either there or in his home in New Hampshire. His artwork can be found in many important museums including The Museum of High Art in Boston; the British Museum in London; The Brooklyn Museum in N.Y.; The Museum of Modern Art in N.Y.; The Whitney Museum of Art in N.Y.; The Library of Congress; the National Gallery in Washington D.C.; and the Smithsonian Institute. The artwork for sale is an original abstract expressionist painting on paper. The artwork consists of densely applied paint (impasto) on glossy white paper that is adhered to a piece of cardboard. Artwork measures 12" high by 16 and 1/2" across. Primary colors are red, green, blue, yellow, white and black. Date is c.1960. The painting is signed at the lower right "V.Wicht" (photo 2). The painting is being sold as attributed to John Von Wicht as there is no paperwork to accompany it.
