Original canvas on-set director’s chair back used by Billy Wilder during the filming of his final film Buddy Buddy. With “BILLY WILDER” printed in black on the chair’s back side on off-white canvas with matching stitching. This piece was obtained from Billy Wilder's personal assistant who is credited on the film. The item measures 21 inches by 7 inches and is custom framed in a black shadow box with a burgundy matting background, museum quality glass, and overall dimensions of 25 1/2 inches by 11 7/8 inches. The canvas is in near fine condition with some minor use, from being used on-set by Mr. Wilder as he directed Buddy Buddy from a screenplay by Francis Veber, starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Paula Prentiss, and Klaus Kinski. Buddy Buddy premiered in the U.S. on December 11, 1981. The great Billy Wilder (1906 - 2002) broke into films as a screenwriter in 1929 in Germany. When Hitler started coming into power in 1933 he emigrated to Paris, then to the U.S. and eventually to Hollywood where he found work as a screenwriter for classic comedies as Ninotchka (1939) with Greta Garbo and Ball of Fire (1941) with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. His career includes such acclaimed films as The Lost Weekend (1945) with Ray Milland and Jane Wyman, Sunset Boulevard (1950), Double Indemnity (1944) with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck, Sabrina (1954), Some Like It Hot (1959) with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon, and The Apartment (1960) with Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray. Wilder received many film award nominations and wins over the years, including twenty-one Oscar nominations; thirteen for screenwriting and eight for directing. He won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Sunset Boulevard, two for The Lost Weekend; Best Director and Best Screenplay, three for The Apartment; Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, and in 1988 the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. In 1986 he was honored with the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Billy Wilder’s legacy as a filmmaker is as solid as they come. This is a terrific piece of cinematic history and offers an opportunity to celebrate the man and his work.
