Description: William Gropper (1897-1977) is a well listed American cartoonist, painter, lithographer and muralist. He was a committed radical who fought totalitarianism all of his life. He was best known for his political work as an illustrator with left-wing publications such as The Liberator; The New Masses; and The Worker. He received his art education at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the School of Fine and Applied Arts (also in New York). For several years he worked as a cartoonist and illustrator for the Sunday edition of the New York Tribune. His artworks can be found in many important collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art in N.y> City; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the City Art Museum of St. Louis; and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard. The artwork for sale is an original 1970 color lithograph from the Shtetl Portfolio by William Gropper. "Shtetl" means a small Jewish town or village in Easter Europe. These towns (think of Fiddler on the Roof) were predominately occupied by a culture of Ashkanazi Jews prior to the Holocaust. Gropper produced 14 color lithographs showing the Jewish way of life in these towns. The image for sale was originally called "Untitled #2" but it has subsequently been titled "Into the Early Hours". The scene depicts the passed out villager laying on the table and 2 dancing celebrants in the background. The village was probably celebrating a joyous occasion like a wedding. The piece is 14" high and 11" across. It is on white BFK Rives paper. It is signed in pencil at the lower left "Gropper" and the artist's insignia is above his name. Under the name, in pencil, are the words "Artist's Proof". The total edition for this portfolio was 20 so this is a very rare proof apart from the edition. Colors include black, brown, white and purple. This artwork is in pristine condition.
