PERIOD ID'd CAPTION ON THE REVERSE: No. 39. EAST FACE OF FORT SUMTER, CHARLESTON, S. C. This view of the Bast, or sea face of Fort Sumter, shows the terrible effects of the fire of the Monitors and the " Ironsides." This portion of the Fort being directly open to the sea, the Monitors and " Ironsides," until she was disabled by a Torpedo boat, had full play upon it. They discharged broadside after broadside upon its walls. The manner in which it withstood their heavy fire for so long a time, is conclusive proof that the walls of Fort Sumter were a solid piece of brick work, reflecting great credit upon its builders. From this face several attempts were made to storm the fort by the Federal Naval Forces, but each attempt was repulsed by the Confederate garrison.. (please see pictures).
