Description: This listing is for a Original Antique Oil Painting of the painting “First Thanksgiving (at Plymouth)” by artist Jennie Brownscombe. This painting comes from an old money estate in the Pittsburgh PA region. It is a near exact (albeit smaller) copy or impression of the original by Jennis Brownscombe. I am unsure if it was done by a student of the artist, as a tribute, or by the artist herself as a practice or scaled down piece. As she earned a majority of her living doing multiple pieces as an illustrator- I personally believe this MAY be a scaled down version of the well known larger piece, and was also done by her. I have not been able to find an artists signature as of yet, however it may need conservation & cleaning to uncover the full history & provenance. The classic American design is excellent for many rooms and a large variety of decor styles. It makes this an excellent staple piece for your collection, one your friends definitely wont have! A great collectors item, for use display gifting or decor It is framed in what I believe to be the original antique or vintage frame. It has had vintage or antique repairs to previous damage across the canvas in multiple areas- see photos. One appears to be a repaired tear, another a hole. Various crackling is also present, but no flaking or missing chunks of paint. I believe with further professional efforts it could be further restored. I have not meddled with it in any way, leaving it in as found condition, to avoid further damage. General info About the artist & artwork courtesy of online and literary sources; Born in rural Pennsylvania, and a direct descendant of an original Mayflower passenger, Jennie Augusta Brownscombe (1850–1936) was raised on a farm throughout her youth. Upon her father’s death in 1868, she began selling illustrations to books and magazines to support herself. She became a popular artist known for depictions of rural life and images from her childhood, as evidenced in the painting The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth (1914). For example- The log cabin pictured in the right background of the scene isn’t historically accurate, but rather is a part of her rural childhood she has placed into her work. Further creative liberties include the Native American headdresses in this scene, more characteristic of the midwestern tribes rather than their more coastal counterparts. The painting became nationally familiar after it was reprinted in a 1914 issue of Life Magazine. Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers always considered.
