This work depicts a mother with her two children sitting in a basket attached to a donkey. A small dog playfully runs alongside the group. The work is painted in meticulous detail with fine brushwork throughout. The style and subject matter are reflective of Greenaway’s illustration work from the 1880s and 1890s, and the image appears to be unpublished. While Crane and Caldecott illustrated stories written for children, Greenaway’s work featured the children themselves—quaintly dressed in ruffles and bonnets and set against picturesque, bucolic landscapes. Condition: Very good overall condition. Tiny areas of craquelure in the body color commensurate with age. Matburn visible along edges. Old adhesive to margins not visible in framing. Small loss to matting lower left. Frame with typical wear and small losses from handling. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
