Description: This listing is for the original painting “Ironside of Les Chevaliers” by William Albert Clark (1880-1963) pictured above. About this work: An exceptional prize bull portrait by renowned English artist William Albert Clark (1880-1963). Identified as “Ironside of Les Chevaliers”, the subject of this portrait is a large brown and white bull depicted at profile view. He stands in a vast open field against a cloudy blue sky. An iron hook and chain wraps around his horns to direct his movement. The work is oil on canvas and is signed and dated in the lower left corner. It is further inscribed with the title in the lower right and again on the reverse with the artist’s address. It is housed in a beautiful, later frame. Clark’s prize bull portraits are highly desirable, and this example ranks among his best. Size: 20 inches tall by 24 inches wide (painting) 25.5 inches tall by 29 inches wide (frame) Provenance: Private collection, Manchester, VT; Acquired from the above About the artist: As the son of Albert Clark and grandson of James Clark, William Albert Clark comes from a family of acclaimed animal artists. Although William was actually registered as ‘Albert William’, he was formerly known by his middle name to avoid confusion with his father. Learning from his father and grandfather, William Clark specialised in the painting of horses, occasionally depicted with their riders or with their carriage and driver. Similarly, he would often create portraits of prize cattle and dogs. To obtain commissions for his work, William Albert Clark was often required to travel and stated on his business card “Gentlemen waited upon in any part of the country”. To try and gain more work under the impression that he was a member of the Royal Agricultural Society, aside from his usual signature of W. A. Clark, William would often add the letters RAS. Condition: Very good overall condition. Relined. Surface craquelure commensurate with age. Minor scattered dots of inpainting (see photo under blacklight). Frame with typical wear. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed! This work will be carefully packed and shipped with insurance and signature confirmation. Free local pick up is also available.
