Description: This auction is for a Original 1899 US Army Philippine Insurrection Campaign Medal Numbered Named Original era medal with full wrap brooch. Numbered along rim No. 18704. Original ribbon in fair condition with a slight tear around hanger. Medal is in excellent condition. The medal number corresponds to Private Wilfried L. Harries of F Company, 17th Infantry Regiment of Washington DC. He would latter move to A Company, known as the Emmet Guards, and eventually be promoted to Sergeant. Pvt. Harries also served in Cuba at the Siege of Santiago and would be awarded the Cuba Occupation medal during a presentation by President McKinley at the District of Columbia's Convention Hall. Wilfried Harries was also a former policeman in the Washington DC police, and following the war was called upon to testify in the court-marshal of Capt. George W. Brandle. Harries, familiar with the tactics used by police to extract information out of prisoners, was asked to describe those tactics and compare to the "torture" used by Capt. Brandle to get POWs to get them to divulge the identify of a serviceman's killer. Likely more can be uncovered about Pvt. Wilfried. See my other auctions with military and other items!
