Description: Original antique color lithographed map compiled by Israel Smith Clare and published in 1899 by George Franklin Cram: "Map of the Medo-Persian Empire Showing Its Twenty Satrapies, B.C. 529-331." The image area measures 23.5 x 32.1 cm [9¼" x 12½"], and the coverage area stretches from the Aegean Sea to the Indus River, depicting the Medo-Persian Empire carved out by Cyrus the Great more than 2500 years ago. Each of the 20 satrapies labeled on the map had its own satrap, or provincial governor, who served as viceroy to the emperor. Each satrap controlled a specific amount of land, collecting taxes and maintaining law and order. The present-day countries which comprised the wide-reaching empire shown on this map include Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. On the reverse side there are maps of ancient Italy and city of Rome, also by I.S. Clare. Clare was a noted historian and author of the 15-volume Illustrated History of All Nations, which brought him a citation from the Société Académique d'Histoire Internationale. He also contributed historical maps to Peale's edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica and was a member of the American Historical Association and the National Geographic Society. This map would make a very handsome display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which this map was published.
