Description: This is an original antique 1859 survey map that begins in the east at Fort Smith (Arkansas) and continues along the Red River through Texas ending at the Rio Grande in present-day New Mexico. The map was made under the direction of Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War by Lieut. A. W. Whipple and Lieut. J. C. Ives. This map is from Volume XI of the "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, from 1853-54 surveys. The map shows details of the 35th parallel surveys, with an inset of Rio Pecos at Anton Chico; Indian territories by tribe are marked, and land descriptions like "extensive prairies slightly undulating" are provided; relief is shown by hachures. This map is in very good condition with no tears, stains, foxing or repairs; there is a slight bit of toning along some folds; please view photos of back side of map for confirmation; it's very unusual to find one of these survey maps in such good condition. The map measures approximately 22" x 50 1/2". This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of US railroad history from the Southwest. Thanks for looking and please forward any questions.
