Description: Size: Print image 25 x 18 cm, mount approx 6cm wide. Condition: Print in very good condition. Mount new. This print is from the first edition account of Captain Cook's Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, published in 1784. It is entitled A Man of Kamtschatka. Cook's third voyage started in 1776, and was the one in which he met his death in 1779. John Webber was the artist who accompanied Cook and his crew, and his drawings were subsequently engraved for the publication. Webber, only 27 years old at the time, went on to become a well known painter and fellow of the Royal Academy, but today is known mainly for his association with Cook and especially his painting of Cook's death and its many engraved versions. One principal purpose of Cook's voyage was to find the elusive North-West passage, which Cook failed to do, but this is why he found himself in 1778 on the peninsula of Kamchatka in the Russian Far East. Already the area had been colonised by Russia at the expense of the indigenous peoples, so Webber's sketches were timely. This print was engraved by William Sharp. The paper is laid paper of the period, and we are happy to guarantee that it is a first edition print.
