Description: Open box and tested Barely larger than a VHS tape, the Fujix P-40U weighs less than a pound. It uses an LCD (liquid crystal display) array of 88,908 pixels to project a full-color image ranging in size from 6 to 40 inches across, measured diagonally. It comes supplied with an AC power adapter, but will operate from selected Fuji and Sony camcorder batteries. Although we advise always reading the directions, the P-40U needs no instructions. On one side are three clearly labeled inputs for video, plus left and right channel stereo audio. On the other side is the power switch and volume control. Rotating the lens barrel adjusts focus. A standard tripod mount adapter on the bottom makes for easy coupling with a floor or table tripod, or Fuji`s own handgrip that comes with its camcorders. You can simply lie it flat on a table. Don`t confuse the pocketable P-40U with the luggable SharpVision LCD video projector. The Sharp projects more than five times as many pixels for over five times the Fuji`s $800 price. The two units serve dissimilar purposes. Fuji designed the P-40U for instant video, not for super picture quality. The P-40U is the ideal mate for a camcorder. Often when you travel you want to view your videos, or show them to a few friends. The camcorder viewfinder is usually black and white, and always very small. A Video Walkman is bigger and heavier than the P-40U and only has a four-inch screen. Many TVs lack direct video inputs. You also can use the P-40U in tandem with a portable video deck or camcorder for a quick sales presentation. The P-40U requires a dark room. Although Fuji mentions pictures as large as 40 inches, we found the largest acceptable size was about 34 inches. That`s about the same as the largest direct-view TV set. For a 34-inch picture the projector must be about 7 feet back from the wall. Even with this arrangement the individual pixels (dots) that make up the picture are visible. Sitting a couple of feet behind the projector makes this problem less noticeable. Resting the projector on your chest while lying in bed should provide a clear 2-foot image on the ceiling. This tiny unit includes stereo speakers. Like the picture, they are a compromise. A small cooling fan in the top of the unit whirs loudly. You can play any VCR or laserdisc player through the P-40U. The picture is sufficient to enjoy a movie. This mini-projector is ideal for people who don`t want to devote space to a TV set. The projection lamp shines for 50 hours. Fuji provides a spare lamp hidden inside the unit. The user replaceable lamps cost $10. That also differentiates the P-40U from other projectors with their $100-$200 lamps.
