Description: One of Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men Disney Legend Ward Kimball's GRIZZLY FLATS RAILROAD STATION Black & White PHOTOGRAPH You are bidding on 7 1/2” x 10 1/2” Black & White Photograph of Ward Kimball’s Grizzly Flats Railroad The Station Depot From Walt Disney’s Film So Dear To My Heart Ward Kimball, one of Walt Disney’s “Nine Old Men”, was also an avid collector of antique Fire Equipment, antique American and European Model Trains . . . along with his own Full-Sized Grizzly Flats Railroad . . . all in his backyard! If you ever had the opportunity to visit Ward and he gave you a personal tour of his backyard collection . . . it was very special! As a lifelong railfan, Ward Kimball purchased a 1881 Barney & Smith Company Passenger Coach in 1938. He originally wanted the coach to house his collection of model trains at his home in San Gabriel, however his wife Betty suggested that he also needed a locomotive to pull the coach. So he purchased a Baldwin 2-6-0 locomotive that was designated for “scrap” for $400 and renamed it the "Emma Nevada". Over the course of several years of restoration, the Kimball’s backyard Grizzly Flats Railroad became operational in 1942. The Grizzly Flats Railroad became the first full-scale backyard railroad in the United States and consisted of 900 feet of narrow-gauge track, including a 500 foot main line. Ward gradually added a second Baldwin steam locomotive, a 1907 0-4-2T, that he named “Chloe" after his daughter. The Chloe pulled a set of train cars custom made by Kimball, consisting of a four-bench open cars added around 1975 and two passenger-carrying gondolas built around 1993. Kimball also added a roundhouse, a water tower, a windmill, and a depot building. The depot building was given to him by his boss, Walt Disney, and was originally used as a set piece for the 1949 Disney film “So Dear To My Heart”. Ward and Betty regularly held “Steam-Ups”, which were parties hosted at their home when the Grizzly Flats Railroad was in operation.
